The purpose of an assessment report is to identify areas where drinking water sources are vulnerable to contamination or over use and to prioritize drinking water issues and drinking water threats within those vulnerable areas. Assessment reports are prepared in accordance with detailed technical rules set out by the Ontario Ministry of Environment (MOE).
The Cataraqui Source Protection Committee posted a Draft Assessment Report for public review and comment in April 2010. Three public open houses were held in May to provide an opportunity for public consultation.
The report was also circulated to municipalities, provincial ministries and other organizations for their review and comment. About 125 individual comments were received, each one was carefully considered by the Source Protection Committee and Conservation Authority staff. The individual comments received and our responses are summarized in a table (click here to view).
The public consultation and subsequent improvements led to the publication of a Proposed Assessment Report (presented below).
A table of the comments received on the Draft Assessment Report and how they were incorporated into the Proposed Assessment Report is available by clicking here.
Comments can be submitted on the Proposed Assessment Report until Friday, August 20, 2010 to the attention of:

Please note that all comments received on this version will be reviewed by the Source Protection Committee and Source Protection Authority before being submitted to the MOE. The process does not allow changes to be made to the document at this time; however, improvements can be required by the province and/or made in updates to the report (see below).
In accordance with the prescribed process, the Cataraqui Source Protection Committee has now submitted its Proposed Assessment Report to the Cataraqui Source Protection Authority. This fall the Source Protection Authority will submit it to the MOE for final approval. The approved version of the Assessment Report will be posted on this website by early 2011.
Looking ahead, the Cataraqui Source Protection Committee will publish the first update to its assessment report in 2011. It is expected to include additional findings related to the Tier 3 Water Budget at Sydenham, drinking water threats along transportation corridors, and other topics. Opportunities to review the additional findings will be posted on this website early next year.
The content of the updated document will be used to support the development of a Cataraqui Source Protection Plan by 2012.
Because of the size of this document, it is posted in pieces. Each chapter is posted separately and each of the maps and appendices are posted separately.
