The Cataraqui Source Protection Committee is hosting a series of public open houses during the month of June to present findings from their studies of municipal drinking water intakes and wells.
The next two open houses will be held in:
“We will be presenting the findings from our Eastern Lake Ontario-St. Lawrence River Intake Protection Zone Study,” said Rob McRae, Source Protection Project Manager. “This is a study focused on all eight municipal drinking water intakes in Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River.”
“The study looks at where the water comes from that enters each municipal intake. We are also examining the effects of surrounding land uses and activities on these intakes.”
The intake protection zone (IPZ) study isbeing conducted by Queen’s University Centre for Water and the Environment and Cataraqui Region Conservation Authority (CRCA) staff.
The open houses will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. with a presentation at 7:30 p.m. by the CRCA staff.
“We are holding open houses in the communities that get their municipal drinking water from Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River. We want the community members to come out and learn about their water and what they can do to help protect it,” added McRae.
The meeting in Gananoque will focus on the Gananoque water intake.
The Bath meeting focuses on the Amherstview, Bath, Greater Napanee and Sandhurst Shores intakes. The Quinte Source Protection Committee will also present preliminary findings from their study of the secondary intake for Greater Napanee. This intake is located in the Napanee River.
