Cataraqui Source Protection Committee selected, first meeting held

The Cataraqui Source Protection Committee held its first meeting on Thursday, November 15 at the Cataraqui Region Conservation Authority Administration Office in Kingston. The Committee members were appointed on November 7.

Source Protection Committee Chair John Williamson welcomed the members to the newly-formed committee. “Our role is to develop a plan to protect drinking water sources in the Cataraqui area,” said Williamson. “It’s going to be a long process, but the talented people we have assembled on this committee will help us to do a great job.”

The committee includes representatives from the municipal, economic and other sectors, as required by regulation under the Clean Water Act.

Appointments from the municipal sector include Mayor John Conley from Athens Township, Mayor Gary Davison from South Frontenac Township, Councillor Ric Bresee from Loyalist Township and Peter Raabe of the engineering department of the City of Brockville. They will be joined by an appointee from the City of Kingston.

The economic sector will be represented by members from agriculture, industry and tourism. Kim Sytsma of Athens and Jeff Peters of Inverary are the agriculture representatives. Robert Cumming of Lafarge Canada is the industry representative. Chris Mangan-Greene of Greene Acres Golf Club, Gananoque, and Scott Ewart of 1000 Islands Kayaking Company, Mallorytown, are the tourism representatives.

Other representatives on the committee come from a lake association, an environmental organization and the public. Nona Mariotti of the Loughborough Lake Association and Richard Lindgren of the Canadian Environmental Law Association are the lake association and environmental organization representatives. The three public representatives are Dr. Kathleen Laird of Kingston, Alex Palilionis of South Frontenac and Jody Willis of Bath.

“We have a good mix of people on our committee,” added Williamson. “There is an excellent variety of backgrounds and experience, as well as different points of view. There is also good representation from across the Cataraqui area.”

The next meeting of the Cataraqui Source Protection Committee is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on December 6, 2007.
